Cafes have grown in popularity in Cebu, with many new ones opening and existing ones expanding. It has become a go-to hangout place for coffee lovers and foodies, alike.
Days after I got back from Manila, I discovered a new spot, Crosswalk Bakery + Cafe. It has earned a lot of buzz on social media. Perfect timing! The owners, Sir Derwin and Chef Cheryl, invited me and my friends to their cafe at the Capitol Site.
According to them, they came up with the name Crosswalk Bakery + Cafe from the idea of bringing people together from different walks of life. In fact, it’s a place where individuals can meet and engage with one another. The essence of the cafe lies in the joy of meeting new people and fostering connections.
That’s why Crosswalk Bakery + Cafe intentionally does not offer a WiFi connection. They believe in encouraging guests to disconnect from their devices and engage in meaningful conversations with friends and family. The cafe aims to be a destination where people come for the food and the opportunity to connect over good conversations.
CROSSWALK BAKERY + CAFE’S JOURNEY OF PASSION, INSPIRATION, AND PERSEVERANCE
Baking has been a lifelong passion for Chef Cheryl, dating back to her high school days. However, practicality led her to pursue a different career path. After graduation, she finally found the courage to follow her heart and enrolled in a baking class mentored by renowned Chef Ernie Barbaran. Starting as a pioneering pastry chef, she embraced the thrill of cake decorating and continued to seek new and exciting challenges.
Crosswalk Bakery + Cafe draws inspiration from a cherished cafe that Sir Derwin and Chef Cheryl used to go to. That cafe provided solace and uplifted spirits during the pandemic. The owners loved the vibrant atmosphere and sought to recreate that same sense of positivity in their own establishment.
CROSSWALK BAKERY + CAFE MENU: ASIAN FLAVORS AND CULINARY ADVENTURES
The menu at Crosswalk Bakery + Cafe is the result of more than a year’s worth of experimentation and inspiration from Asian flavors. Traveling played a significant role in their culinary adventures, such as their unique take on the Korean egg drop sandwich. They even traveled to South Korea to taste the authentic version before putting their own twist on it.
Their signature cakes, the carrot cake, and the red velvet cake, are renowned for their exquisite taste. From cookies and brownies to cakes and pies, there is no shortage of delectable treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. If I were to play favorites, I would choose their tablea brownie ala mode and Cebu mango nut cake.
FUSION DELIGHTS AND FARM-TO-TABLE CONCEPT
Crosswalk Bakery + Cafe’s menu features tantalizing dishes with Asian fusion twists. Every dish is crafted with care, from baby back ribs with a spicy Sriracha sauce to orange-glazed chicken catering to the Pinoy fondness for sweet flavors. The D-Chan Pasta pays tribute to Chef Cheryl’s husband, Sir Derwin, with a Chinese fusion twist on a popular pizza chain’s Charlie Chan pasta. Additionally, their own homemade kimchi adds a unique touch to the Kimchi Carbonara. The cafe takes pride in its “farm-to-table” concept, sourcing fresh ingredients from its own garden and ensuring that everything is cooked to order.
FROM POPULAR COFFEE CLASSICS TO REFRESHING DRINKS
If you’re a fan of coffee and milkshakes, there are a handful of varieties that can satisfy your sweet tooth. From popular classics to specialized beverages like its original espresso fizz. Personally, I love their strawberry espresso fizz and their creamy affogato.
PINOY-STYLE HIGH TEA AND A PET-FRIENDLY HAVEN
During the pandemic, a single order for a bilao of kakanin became a huge hit for the cafe. This led them to expand their menu to include a Pinoy-style high tea featuring a variety of kakanin paired with Tablea or cacao drink. Favorites like sapin-sapin and Biko are sure to delight customers looking for a taste of Filipino tradition.
In addition to indoor dining, Crosswalk Bakery + Cafe offers an aesthetic outdoor dining setup that welcomes guests and their beloved pets. They wanted to create a pet-friendly space where everyone could enjoy their time together.
