People when under emotional stress turn to food that comforts them. The type of food that brings back childhood memories and some that gives them sugar rush.
Lately, I have been under a lot of stress and made me crave for for ngohiong and puso then finish it off with some sweet pastries.
Call it perfect timing, I got a call informing me that I have food delivery from Cake Me Home and Ngohiong Express.
CAKE ME HOME
Cake Me Home is a Cebu homegrown local bakeshop that specializes in cassava cakes, and different kinds of pies (egg, buko, pineapple, and even meat). These are the recipes of an old bakeshop in the 80’s in Cebu Doctor’s Hospital in Capitol. When the bakeshop, Honeysuckle, sold it to them, they developed the products and sold it under a new name, Cake Me Home.
They used to sell in SM grocery but due to the pandemic, they closed and shifted to online selling.
So far, I’ve tasted their Buko Pie and MacaFlan. They were both undeniably good!
BUKO PIE
A traditional Filipino baked young coconut custard pie. It’s an all-time Filipino favorite pasalubong. The filling is sweet, tasty and has a rich flavor of the buko meat.
The next day, I warmed a couple of slices in the oven. The filling simply melted in my mouth! Then I tried drizzling it with condensed milk. It was a total game-changer in eating pies.
Each box of Buko Pie, Cassava Cake, Egg Pie, and Pineapple Pie is Php 180/box. If you purchase 6 boxes or more, the pie costs Php 165/box.
MACAFLAN
A layered mini cake of sweet shredded chewy coconut macaroon and creamy caramel custard. This sweet treat is perfect for light snacking when you’re on the go.
What I love about this dessert is the perfect marriage of contrasting textures that teases your palates. First layer you’ll get that soft and creamy custard which entices you to dig in some more. Then once you sink your teeth a bit more, you’ll chew on the shredded bits of the coconut. That sensation plus the savory taste of the dessert simply makes you want to get another piece of MacaFlan. Trust me, it’s really good!
MacaFlan costs Php30 each and Php180 for a box of 6 pcs.
NGOHIONG EXPRESS
The owners of Cake Me Home also owns Ngohiong Express. It is a fastfood chain that serves ngohiong which has become the locals’ favorite viand.
Ngohiong Express started out as food van type of business twenty years ago along Jakosalem corner Manalili Street. The business concept clicked and evolved from a food van type to a full sit-in fastfood restaurant. Through the years, they have added more dumpling favorites to their menu which Cebuanos have come to love.
Recently they rolled out its Take Me Out Potluck Box. This promo package is ideal for family gatherings or potluck parties especially holiday season is just around the corner.
NGOHIONG
This Chinese-Cebuano viand looks like a spring roll but it has a different filling. It is a mix of turnips, spices, and coconut heart or “ubod” and best served with spicy hot sauce (spicy sauce and soy sauce).
The ngohiong is packed with vegetable filling which adds more flavor. It is not greasy compared to other ngohiongs I’ve tasted. And I love their hot sauce even though it was too spicy for my taste. I ended up eating seven large pieces which showed how delicious it is.
